The current spending on military and hardware is in excess of $783 billion a year.
This far exceeds the amount needed to defend the country and is more than the next seven countries combined. Military spending accounts for half of all discretionary spending. Fewer than 20 years ago, in 1999, the military budget was roughly half what it is today. Many military analysts believe we can invest less in hardware and more in our veterans, in infrastructure, in education, and in solutions to climate change and be a stronger, more secure, less fossil fuel dependent country.
